Ordering chicks

You’re making the leap and getting chickens!! Let’s explore ordering chicks. You want to order chicks in advance to get the breeds, egg colors, and timing you want. Most hatcheries will sell out so getting your preorder in early is important! Hatcheries often open their preordering in late fall for the following year. Here is a video on ordering chicks:

Breeds

If you are just getting started with egg layers, here is a list of some of my favorite chicken breeds for beginners:

Light Brown Egg Layers

  • Wyandotte, Orpington, Rhode Island Red, Golden Buff, Brahma, Speckled Sussex

Dark Brown Egg Layers (Some with speckles!)

  • Welsummer, Marans

Cream/White Egg Layers

  • Leghorn, Cochin, Swedish Flower

Blue Egg Layers

  • Ameraucana, Cream Legbar, Easter Egger (blueish green)

Green Egg Layers

  • Green Queen, Wheaten Olive Egger, Olive Egger, Partridge Olive egger
